Biology Questions – Mendelian Genetics, Mitosis and Meiosis – Need to control please?
I had a go at these issues, but really I need someone to see how meiosis and mitosis can be confusing! Any help would be appreciated. Q: In a diploid organism with 24 chromosomes in a cell does not dive (2n = 24), how many chromatids in total would have to: i) in a cell of 1 prophase II of meiosis) in a cell of 2 prophase of meiosis iii) a cell in prophase of mitosis iv) one of the two nuclei in a cell in early telophase 1 meiosis v) one of the two nuclei in a cell in early telophase 2 of meiosis VI) one of the two nuclei of a cell in early telophase of mitosis vii) in a cell of 1 anaphase of meiosis VIII) in a cell of 2 anaphase of meiosis My answers: i) 96 (ie, homologous pairs so four chromatids therefore 4 * 24 = 96) ii) 48 iii) 48 iv) 24 v) 12 vi) 24 vii) 48 VIII) 24
i) The cell has 24 chromosomes, each has been doubled so that it would only be 24 * 2 = 48. ii) The number of chromosomes (and therefore chromatids) was halved to 24 iii) the total number Chromosome 48 is the right thing. iv) Meiosis I reduces by half the chromosomes 24 is correct. v) only should be 12 since we have separated the chromatids in meiosis II, so you are correct again. vi) There should be 24, since she will have the full number of chromosomes. Vii) All chromatids still be present in a cell for 48 is correct. Viii) halved 24 is the right thing.
