VB/VBA/DML for MS Access ?
I have a MS Access 2000 database with a date field that has been populated with non-friendly dates as follows … 9/22/05AH, 5/3/02A, 10/23/01ALC, 3/3-12/05A, 3/3-15/05
My problem is that I need to add a new field for the alpha characters (that represent codes), populate the new field with the alpha characters, and delete the alpha characters from the date field. In addition, I need change the date series to the first date in the series and change the dates to the same format.
How can I use either VB, VBA, or DML (SQL) to accomplish this? Does anyone have a code that would work for this function?
Thank you very much.
Also, if you would like more information, please feel free to send me an e-mail at steinmancloud9@yahoo.com –Thanks again.
I don’t have a VBA reference handy, but that’s the way I’d go. The script would process something like this:
1) Backup database (always when doing major changes like this!)
2) ALTER TABLE to add new_alpha (as CHAR or VARCHAR) and new_date (as DATE) columns.
3) Define and open cursor to retrieve the table.
4) Loop to fetch rows sequentially. For each row:
a) Move old_date to work_date. Evaluate and modify work_date field by:
i) Strip off rightmost alpha characters and store in work_alpha
ii) Check whether remaining field contains a ‘-’. If so, eliminate it and all characters until next-occuring ‘/’.
b) INSERT new_alpha, new_date INTO your_table VALUES (:work_alpha, DATE):work_date) WHERE CURRENT OF cursor
5) Close cursor
6) ALTER TABLE to drop old_date column
7) ALTER TABLE to rename new_date column old_date
