Soviet Main

The M1 Abrams battle tank is to fight the main tank of the U.S. army and marine organisms of the United States, with three main versions begin to be deployed in 1980: M1, M1A1 and M1A2. The latest versions of the M1A2 have a new armor and electronics package. It is named the name of General Creighton Abrams, former Army chief of staff and army armored regiment thirty-seventh order. M1 Abrams replaced the M60 Patton in U.S. service and the M48A5. It is, however, was useful alongside the M60A3, who had written the right service, two years before (1978) M1, for over a decade.

The first attempt to replace the series of aging M60 tank was the abortive MBT-70, developed with Germany. M60 Patton were in itself a progressive evolution of a design from the time of World War II M26 Pershing, with a very large, and the armor and not the mean and the gun compared to contemporary Soviet designs. The MBT-70 was very ambitious, both U.S. programs of weapons of the sixties. He had a missile system for weapons, the suspension of the knees, a controller located in the tower, and several other ideas that ultimately proved unsuccessful. The cancellation of this project paved the way for storage of more success of the M1 Abrams, which has incorporated most of the tedious innovations tested by the MBT-70.

M1 Abrams was designed by Chrysler Defense (in 1979, purchased by the Division, Division of Chrysler's defense ground systems from General Dynamics) and is currently produced by General Dynamics in Lima, in Ohio and the first letter service of the U.S. Army in 1980. An improved version of M1, the M1A1, was introduced in 1985. The M1A1 has M256 smoothbore gun 120 mm, developed by Rheinmetall AG of Germany for 2 leopard, improved armor, and a CBRN protection system.
